Construction of the Gilon Tunnel for the Akko-Karmiel Railway

Netivei Israel – The National Transport Infrastructure Company / 2012-2016

Geotope-Levin participated in the design of the Akko Karmiel Railway in 2003-2005. Geotope-Levin managed all of the geotechnical surveys at the design stage. This included examination of all rock mass characteristics including statistical analysis of jointing components, execution of drilling along the entire alignment, including the Gilon Tunnel segment, and issuance of guidelines for laboratory testing. Analysis of the findings was summarized in a geotechnical report, which included classification of the rock mass for tunneling purposes. The geotechnical work was reviewed by the German firm De-Consult, in accordance with international standards.

Project construction began in 2012 under the auspices of Netivei Israel – The National Transport Infrastructure Company and included the excavation of a pair of tunnels, each approximately 4.8 km long. Geotope-Levin prepared geotechnical documentation and rock mass classification throughout the excavations.
